HAGRID- the Friend of Fantastic Creatures

Hagrid played by Robbie Coltrane

Rubeus Hagrid was one of the most important characters in the fantasy novel series Harry Potter. He was the first wizard Harry saw (except his parents) and he was also the one who had been entrusted by Dumbledore to reintroduce Harry Potter to the wizarding world and also bring Harry to Hogwarts. Dumbledore said he would trust Hagrid with his life. His trust for Hagrid could be easily seen in those secret or high-dangered missions that he gave Hagrid, which showed he did not only trust Hagrid in his personality, but also trusted him a lot on his ability.

He spoke to animals, took good care of them. He was good-tempered and easy-going most of the time, not when you go and insult or mess with the people or things that he cared about, for example: his fantastic creatures friends, Harry and Dumbledore. Dumbledore gave him a lot of help during the downslope of his life, which is why he showed a good deal of loyalty towards Dumbledore, even willing to hurt himself but to accomplish the mission that Dumbledore gave him. I like the relationship between Hagrid and Dumbledore, I could see so much trust and faithful among them.

Despite his gigantic body, Hagrid was actually a big boy with the purest heart. He cared so much for those fantastic creatures, he truly took them as his best friends from the bottom of his heart. Knowing that he was the creatures’ best friend, very few would know that Hagrid was actually allergic to cat, which was also why he had chosen an snowy owl as a pet for Harry instead of a cat.

Hagrid always appeared to be a positive and warm character through the series, and he always provided us a little comic relief, however, he actually had a tragic family background. Since his giant mother left him when he was at the age of three, he was then raised alone by his wizard father. He often faced a lot of prejudices due to his enormous body or the half-giant blood (people think that giant is cruel and violence) since young, even wizarding community had racist problems. Poor Hagrid had to dealt with prejudices and loneliness his entire life, and he was easily accused for things he had never done just before his different body size with most. This is why I especially like about Hagrid, he never complained how unfair or tragedic his life was, but he continued to treat people whole-heartedly and bring positive power to people around him.

“I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say, ‘there’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth botherin’ with.”

-Hagrid ( J.K. Rowling)

Although Harry had lost his parents since his very young, he was very lucky to have three father-like adults to accompany him and give him guidance. One was his godfather, Sirius Black, the another was the school’s professor, Albus Dumbledore and of course, the Gamekeeper, Rubeus Hagrid. Hagrid in the book was as father as friend to Harry, he could hug Harry like an old father, he could also cheer for Harry like his best friend.

To Harry, Ron and Hermione, Hagrid was undoubtedly their big friend. The three always visited Hagrid in his little hut by the Forbidden Forest and had some nice little chat with him. Well, however, Hagrid has a habit of letting slip bits of information that was confided to him. Which I think is pretty cute as he is such a one-single-minded big boy.

Hagrid could be brave, but he was also timid sometimes, especially his dearest was facing harm and he might not be able to save them. Like the time he was so sad and scared for Buckbeak the Hippogriff for being executed. He might cry like a big boy sometimes, but whenever Harry needed him, he was always there to provide him support.

People can always easily recognize Hagrid by two things: his enormous body, and of course, his heavy accent. But we also wonder what kind of English does Hagrid talk, because the way Rowling wrote Hagrid’s words (either skip parts of words or changes words order) makes him speak so uniquely, it is like a dialect or Scottish. My favourite Hagrid’s typical mantra: Blimey!

We could not forget Hagrid’s classic pink umbrella too! For Hagrid’s wand had been snapped into half when he was expelled from Hogwarts, Hagrid had concealed the broken pieces of his wand into a pink umbrella. Even though the shards still possessed a good portion of the wand’s power, Hagrid had hardly used it to perform any complex spells since he never graduate, there are only few times throughout the series he had conjured a spell.

According to Rowling herself, the choice to make Hagrid red and Dumbledore white is closely linked to their personalities. “Rubeus (red) Hagrid and Albus (white) Dumbledore… both hugely important to Harry, seem to me to represent two sides of the ideal father figure he seeks; the former is warm, practical and wild, the latter impressive, intellectual, and somewhat detached.”
